Easter Car Accidents

We all want to escape the city and feel the last of a fading sun before winter blankets us but, unfortunately, for some it’s their final road trip. This year, Easter has proved to be less fatal on our roads than previous years. The increased presence of police on roads along with double demerit points may have helped.

Just from asking around our office we know that there were many more non-fatal crashes on our roads. Up and down the Pacific Highway between the Gold Coast and Narooma there were eye witness accounts of 4 car pile ups, boat trailers flipping and surfboards flying off car roof racks.

The data reflected in these tables show road crash fatalities which occurred over  a five day period, beginning the Thursday before Good Friday and concluding on Easter Monday in each of the years shown.

 Total 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013  2014
Australia New Zealand 31 19 36 30 35 33 26 25 27 10 25  19

Compared to other countries we are very lucky on our roads. In South Africa a total of 214 deaths occurred on the road during Easter. New Zealand had 7 deaths on their roads over the Easter period.

Stay safe on our roads and we hope you have a good Anzac Day long weekend.
